Fried Green Tomatoes (Crispy Southern Style)
INGREDIENTS:
4 firm green tomatoes, sliced into thick rounds
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup cornmeal
1 cup buttermilk (or regular milk + 1 tsp vinegar)
2 large eggs
1 tsp salt
1 tsp black pepper
1 tsp paprika
½ tsp garlic powder (optional)
Oil for frying (vegetable or canola)
INSTRUCTIONS
Prep the tomatoes
Slice tomatoes into ½-inch rounds.
Pat them dry with paper towels.
Set up the coating station
Use 3 bowls:
Bowl 1: Flour + salt + pepper + paprika + garlic powder
Bowl 2: Eggs + buttermilk (whisk together)
Bowl 3: Cornmeal
Bread the tomatoes
Dip each tomato slice in the flour mixture.
Then dip into the egg mixture.
Finish by coating in cornmeal.
Fry
Heat ½ inch of oil in a skillet over medium heat.
Fry each slice 2–3 minutes per side until golden and crispy.
Transfer to paper towels to remove excess oil.
Serve
Enjoy hot with ranch, remoulade, or your favorite dipping sauce.
